Look who I met today :)
I went in to interview today for a volunteer position at a place called "Wild Wings." It's sort of a refuge for birds of prey that cannot be released for one reason or another. It went great, and I start next Saturday.
AND look who I got to see up close... http://www.wildwingsinc.org/store.asp?pid=15313
She's gorgeous and giant. The director took me into her enclosure. I didn't touch her of course, but it was amazing just being that close to her.
I also went to see these guys... http://www.wildwingsinc.org/store.asp?pid=15315
Also... http://www.wildwingsinc.org/store.asp?pid=15312
I met Shasta (same name as my dog, but pronounced differently). He doesn't have down feathers, so he stayed inside.
So once I start, I could get to start handling the birds in 2-3 weeks, once they get used to my being around. Starting with the kestrels and the snowy owls (who are sooo cute) and then working my way up to the hawks, etc. I'm so excited to start!

I volunteered when I was in my early 20s in the educational dept of the Oklahoma City Zoo. We used a beautiful red-tailed hawk in the programs and she was lots of fun to handle.

That is wonderful!! Thank you for the link, too. All of the birds there are gorgeous, I can only imagine how they look in person!

Im a big chickenchit when it comes to birds of prey! Rescue/rehabbed/released back to wild a couple of baby barn owls and one burrowing owl adult that was hit by car but other than that, I try to stay away because they can sure pick up on the fear! Good for you! Enjoy!!

Re: Look who I met today :)
Thanks everyone. I can't wait for Saturday now lol.
And I will definitely take pictures whenever I get the chance! Especially once I get to start handling them... y'all will get tired of seeing me with big birds on my arm.
I was just in awe when I got to get so close to Athena. She kept clucking at me.

Re: Look who I met today :)
I started on Saturday, and most of that day was spent cleaning and just learning how things work there. I learned how to read and fill out all the charts, and I fed too.
Today, my second day there, was AMAZING!!
I met Tara, the bobcat, and I got to pet her for awhile. She is such a sweetie, she was purring so loudly when I was petting her.
I also started handling birds already! Today I held 2 screech owls (one of them I held twice), a red-tailed hawk (twice), and a great horned owl. Before I left, I hand-fed Zeus, the male golden eagle.
I love this place already, and I can't believe I got to handle the birds on my second day! Plus, everyone else who works there is really nice.
The director took some pictures of me holding the hawk and the GHO, so once she sends them to me, I'll put them up here.

That is so great! I can't wait to see those pics too! And you got to pet the bobcat! That sounds like the most awesome volunteer work there could be. What more could you ask for, birds of prey AND big cats! Too cool!

It is Sherri, I love it so much! By far my favorite job, paid or volunteer.
Here are some pictures. I think this should work, but if not, let me know.

Congratulations, Hollis! What a great start. The director obviously could tell that you are very responsible and had a great feeling about you and your judgement.

Haha yeah it was crazy going from a tiny little screech owl to a RTH! But that's nothing compared to the eagle I fed... so powerful! One of the guys there is working with Zeus (the male) to get him used to being handled. I can't imagine having him gripping my arm.

Re: Look who I met today :)
Just an update... so far I've held:
2 screech owls
American Kestrel
Red Tail Hawk
Broad Winged Hawk
Barn Owl (I absolutely LOVE her even though she is such a pain - always wanted to fly and constantly bating)
Great Horned Owl
Saw-Whet Owl
Long Eared Owl
Crow
And I love them all. It's so cool getting to know their personalities and what they like and don't like. And some of those stories are incredible (either their survival or the horrible things humans did to them or both).
