Pureed fruits and veggies? How good can that be long term? Empty Pureed fruits and veggies? How good can that be long term?

Post by sherri Fri Jan 30, 2009 9:58 pm

I hear alot of people telling others that if you blend their fruits and veggies together that their gliders wont be able to pick out the good stuff. Also that their gliders love the pureed so much better.

But my question is how good can it be in the long run? I know that they often use mealies to clean their teeth, but wouldnt the same apply to fruits and vegtables? Also, I love watching my gliders use their hands to eat. I mean if you give them nothing but their blended mixes everynight, where is the "fun" in eating?

I dont know if there is any connection to all this blended food and the amount of abcesses we've been seeing lately, but it does make me wonder?

I give mine Veggies and then fruits blended because some of the fruits they dislike but like it better when all are mixed together with apple juice and a little yogurt!

About every other day I pour a little glideraid over their fruits and that also helps mine to eat their fruits, or sometimes I will pour a little of the gerber juice with yogurt over it too. They seem to like that as well.

But I am really curious about to much blended food. Especially the people that are mostly feeding their gliders nothing but blended hpw, bml and their fruits and veggies too. I think that is to much. But thats just my opinion.

I would like others input on this, since I'm not as educated in diets or glider tooth decay or abcesses.

I feed HPW and most of the gliders get cubes of fruits and veggies and they eat everything. I have 3 cages who leave certain veggies. So they get cubed fruit and Veggie Relish but I also put a few whole veggies in the bowl also in hopes they decide to eat them. I have also found if they dislike the fruits or veggies to put them in the the bowl and put the HPW on top.

I also feel they need to pick up some of their food and eat it.

Maybe people who blend fruits don't just feed blended fruits but blend the ones the gliders don't readily accept but they want them to eat.

I feed a gloppy blend of stuff but also chopped veggies and fruit. And I use a high quality cat kibble so they get lots of crunch. They also chew on the branches in their cage.

I think tooth decay comes from too much sugar or processed carbs. JMHO

My gliders have weird eating habits the only vegetable they will eat is peas and they will not eat fruit or other vegetables unless it is blended up with their food (BML diet). I have tried to do everything I can think of to get them to eat it the other way, but they are picky eaters. So they get that, mealies and once in a while a yogie treat.

I feed hpw and do the same thing...cut up their fruits into small chunks they can hold in their paws. I blended their fruits together twice (smoothie) and they liked it ok, but I just like giving them the actual fruit chunks.

I really wouldn't think that fruits and veggies - at least the ones they eat and the amounts they eat - would have much of a "toothbrush" effect. Like others, I offer mine little chunks rather than a puree. I aim to have all the pieces roughly the same size as the peas and corn.

My gliders always have sticks and twigs and branches to chew. I think the bark stripping is very good for their teeth.

Here's an idea...

If you feed the smoothie because your gliders are picky, then why not toss in some chopped up pieces of what they LIKE, after you've make the smoothie, and then frezze it like that. That way you know that they'll be eating what is good for them, but they'll also be getting some some to chew.

Sounds good in theory... lol!

Personally, I feed mine the HPw, chopped veggies, and fruit smoothie. I make multiple fruit blends with just 1 or 2 fruits each. I've got 4 blends I feed: apple and green grape, papaypa, watermelon and peach yogurt(the yogurt is too add thickness since the watermelon is too watery), and cantaloupe. They're favorite, of course, is the watermelon and peach yogurt blend, lol.

I don't think there's anything unhealthy about feeding an all-liquid diet as long as you offer them other things to chew(mealies, dried fruit, euc leaves & branches, etc...), but I DO think it'd be a bit boring to have an all-liquid diet. :\

My guys love their chopped fruits and veggies far too much for me to blend them, now if I am going away and having someone come to feed them it is easier to have puree's made up, so they dont have to tediously chop everything fresh. But, I never go away longer than 2 or 3 days to ensure that they do get their fresh stuff...

Relish's and smoothies work for some people, but..not me Very Happy
