SOOO MAD.... vet
So about a year ago I asked my vet if he saw kinkajous he said YES and then two months ago I double checked to see if he did he said yes.. today I called to make an apt for Kermit and they booked him 30 mins later they call back and say they do not see his type of primate I stated he is not a primate and they take other primates and they said they couldnt do it.. So now I am really mad and I already found a new vet but he is an hour away! so I am mad and My vet is calling me tmrw so I am hoping he will change his mind.. because I do not like taking all my animals to different vets I have a vet for my dogs ( been seeing my families dogs for over 25 years) and then DR Nolan for my Gliders and was suppose to be all my other animals too. But he wont see KINKAJOUS!?!?! Why call your self an exotic vet if you do not see all exotics?
Re: SOOO MAD.... vet
They called back and said they would see him but they want 275 for a CHECK UP! I do not want to even find out how much it is to fix. but I have another vet that is alot cheaper!

Re: SOOO MAD.... vet
That is crazy!!! It makes me so mad how they can jack the price up like that just because its an exotic pet. How stupid is that?!?!

Re: SOOO MAD.... vet
Kris, its because of the family kinks are in being a rabies vector, the increased risk to the vet/staff. Not to mention it sounds like he just doesnt like the species so over priced his fees for them so he doesnt have to deal with them but is still not exactly refusing a "good" customer. Just because he is an exotic vet doesnt mean he has to treat all exotics. He probably had a bad experience before and is not wanting a repeat.
Remember when we were talking about dog bites and I mentioned my bewbie bite? Well, it was a black and tan coon hound that bit me. Actually went after my jugular to kill me and I arched back and he nailed my boob instead, shredded it to the ribcage. It was very very traumatizing not to mention having to have 3 different reconstructive surgeries. I still can't be around/handle/treat a coon hound. I totally freeze up and go into panic mode.
I realise that not ALL coon hounds are like that, but it still doenst stop the panic attack!

Re: SOOO MAD.... vet
I've seen the same vet for at least 20 years and she won't see my gliders, birds, or pot-bellied pigs. I travel over an hour for the avian vet but he's one of the best in the US so it's worth it.
If a vet isn't comfortable w/a species or knowledgeable about that species, I'd rather know and go to a vet that really enjoys and is curious about that animal.
You need a zoo vet.

Re: SOOO MAD.... vet
You also have to remember that with all the different types of exotics and now the bad rap they are getting the vets are just not treating them as freely as they use to. They have to think about all the clients waiting in the waiting room as some people are very uncomfortable around exotics. Then I am sure if they treat exotics other then hamsters/GP's/ rats etc. they have to have insurance to cover their butts in case something happens. Also exotics take more time then domestic pets to see and evaluate.
You are better off seeing a vet who wants to see them not one doing it because you are a long time customer.
Yes it was wrong they said they would now they say they do not and then they will for $250 but after the chimp attack they are being much more strict about it.
Kris you are better off traveling a bit to get good vet care with vets who want to treat them rather then one who is doing you a favor.

Re: SOOO MAD.... vet
That's great, Kris. My glider vet charges the same as a guinea pig neuter for gliders.

Re: SOOO MAD.... vet
I have to agree with the statment made about exotics. You add the word "exotic" pet and it's an immediate price jack-up.
Kris, I'm glad you have a good vet at cheaper prices!

Re: SOOO MAD.... vet
Awwwwwww Springhaas are soooo sweet! When I worked at Marine World wayyy back in like 1984 we were the first to sucessfully raise a rejected baby in capitivity! Her name was Pogo and she LOVED the muntjack deer Annie that was a baby in the baby animal nursery at the same time. Pogo used to race around the floor with Annie before/after feedings. If she wasnt doing that she was standing/hopping beside me holding onto my shoe laces!! LOL...I adored working in the vet clinic/baby animal nursery and it was a total priveledge to be able to work with Laurie Gage as she is one of the top marine mammal vets in the US and a wonderful person to boot!!

Re: SOOO MAD.... vet
Kris,
It was an amazing experience and a time in my life I highly value! Laurie Gage is an amazing woman and a truely amazing vet! I think I was able to get the position inside the vet clinic/baby animal nursery beating out hundreds of other applicants because of my affinity for raising wildlife orphans (Shes always has one animal or another that she is "raising") and on the subject alone I learned sooo much from her! I believe she wrote a book on the subject (raising babies) and I think she has a pic of Pogo on the cover if I remember correctly! She also has a picture of Mary Fleming with the kitties Mairo and Cairo, they were at the baby animal nursery about the same time!
She also had a very "quirky" personality...One time we were neutering pigmy goats in the childrens petting area (in the barn of course) and in walked Steve, the big bad primate handler/trainer. He took one look at what we were doing and passed out cold! From then on Lauries rule was If it was neutered, the testes went into the big glass jug, never giving us a reason why! At Christmas we found out the reason why. She presented Steve with the jug as a gag gift from the "girls at the vet clinic" LOL

Re: SOOO MAD.... vet
Sorry to hear about your vet issues... and it looks like you're SOL on the springhaas for quite some time.... if you become a zoo, then you can get some from that one breeder...
Re: SOOO MAD.... vet
Well Kris maybe when you get your haas and get it out of your system we can get back to more important things like marmsssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
